Wishful thinking by Charles Moore

I am a big admirer of Charles Moore, who I think is one of the most articulate Journalists writing on British Politics. But when he says that the Human Rights Act is for Tony Blair's Government what the ERM was for John Major's, I think it's wishful thinking on his part.

John Major was forced to take Britain out of the ERM in 1992 and the British economy started improving within months. But as things stand, Britain is ulikely to leave the European Convention on Human Rights any time soon. Even if the Tories are elected in 2009, it's not at all likely that they will be able to change anything. One can only hope that our Judiciary will one day wake up to the threat that Britain faces.
